Buying the antique jewelry sounds crazy and stupid. But actually jewelry is just about the best investments you can make. This is because the value of jewelry increases over time. The older a piece of jewelry is, the more expensive it gets. This is the reason that there are many antique jewelry collectors in the world today.

Being that the market for antique jewelry is actually quite large, one must take care to get his or her money’s worth. Many people out there are ready and willing to take advantage of a person’s naivety. Dealing with the amount of money required to invest in antique jewelry needs a bit of finesse. You need to know what you are doing in order to avoid being scammed.

Most experts agree that the value of antique jewelry always depends on its condition. The rock may look good, but is the condition of the jewelry actually sound? How can you tell?

One thing you should do is check out the back of the jewelry. The fact is, you can rarely really tell the condition of the jewelry from the front. No forger is stupid enough to make fake antique jewelry look bad. What should you be looking at?

The answer to this question is: seams. The seams of antique jewelry often say a lot about the condition of a piece. In fact, the very existence of a seam can tell you that the piece may have had a previous life. It is often the case that jewelers will cut a piece of jewelry out of an antique dress or other old accessories in order to make them easier to sell.

Seams may also indicate the fact that the antique jewelry has been repaired. This can either be good or bad, depending on the quality of repair. If a piece of antique jewelry has been repaired, then it is either in a better condition or it is in a worse condition. One sure way of telling a bad repair from a good one is color.

Badly-repaired jewelry often has different colored seams. This is because of the fact that people who have no idea what they are doing often use cheaper metals to repair antique jewelry. If a repair is noticeable then it is badly done.

You should also take a look at the pins or attachments found at the back of the jewelry as these are indicators of age. Different styles of pins often indicate different ages and thus, you can tell whether or not a piece of jewelry is truly antique from the pin.

In recent years, the old v has come back to fashion trend. Antique jewelry means old-fashioned jewelry. To term it ‘antique’, the jewelry must be at least 70 years old. It could refer to jewels handed down from generation to generation, and it also includes jewelry with a historic value. They are treasured not just for the money value. Rather, they are relics from a memorable past.

There are different types of antique jewelry. The most common ones are estate antique jewelry, Victorian, Edwardian, Art deco and Art nouveau.

Estate antique jewelry pieces are recent pre-owned ones. These excel in workmanship. The pieces are generally low priced compared to new jewelry. This type of jewelry is commonly auctioned off. Some of the most popular pieces are engagement rings, wedding rings, necklaces, bracelets and pendants.

The elegance of the Victorian era is captured in antique Victorian jewelry. A unique type of Victorian jewelry was hair jewelry. Locks of hair were saved and later on turned into ornate hair jewelry such as watch chains, bracelets and rings. Hair jewelry served the purpose of being a very personal memento at the time of parting or death. Today antique hair jewelry is valued at hundreds or thousands of dollars depending on the condition of the piece.

The period from 1920 to 1935 is referred to as the Art deco period. It produced dazzling pieces in bright colors and straight lines. Long earrings were a popular part of Art deco jewelry. The antique Art deco jewelry is studded with emeralds, sapphires and rubies. These are jewels fit for a queen. Needless to say they are exorbitant and rare.

Art nouveau jewelry was popular in the years between 1890 and 1919. Motifs used in this jewelry were inspired by nature. Butterflies, dragons, orchids, snakes and lilies were the popular motifs preferred. Widespread usage of precious and semi-precious gemstones, horn, copper shell, tortoise shell, ivory and shells was the norm.

The brief span from 1901 to 1915 is referred to as the Edwardian era. Edwardian jewelry had diamonds and pearls set in platinum, creating intricate filigree patterns.

“Finding the rough diamonds is only the first step. Once diamonds have been mined and processed out of the ‘overburden’ (that is, the kimberlite rocks in which they are imbedded), the rough crystals are sorted and categorized according to their size, color, shape and other characteristics. At this point, a diamond can follow one of two routes.

The most common route is through the channels of DeBeers’ Central Selling Organization (CSO). Many people are familiar with DeBeers mainly because of their advertisements and commercials and because of the famous motto that they coined in the early half of the 20th century: “”A Diamond is Forever.”"

While DeBeers’ market influence has decreased somewhat over the last few years, they still control the majority of the world’s diamond production (an estimated 30% to 40% of annual diamond production). The purchasing arm of the CSO not only buys diamonds from member mines around the world; it also finances mining technology for governments which do not have the means to mine their own deposits. Most of what is bought through the CSO is sent to London to be offered to buyers through DeBeers marketing arm, the Diamond Trading Corporation (DTC).

The DTC holds ten week-long selling sessions called ‘sights’ each year. These sights are by invitation only, and only a handful of diamond manufacturers from around the world (called ‘sightholders’) are allowed to attend. These sightholders may chose to cut the rough diamonds they buy themselves, or they may chose to sell some of the rough diamonds to smaller manufacturers.

These smaller manufacturers cut the rough diamonds and sell the polished gems either to jewelry manufacturers (who set the diamonds into finished pieces of jewelry and then sell the jewelry to jewelry retailers), or to diamond wholesalers (who then, in turn, sell the diamonds to diamond retailers).

In the less common route from mine to market, some independent miners elect not to sell their mine production to the DeBeers cartel. Instead, they offer newly mined diamonds directly to other world buyers. These buyers, in turn, may chose to cut and sell the diamonds themselves, or pass the diamonds along within the industry in a manner similar to that described above. ”

Birthstones are not only beautiful gemstones full of sparkling colour, they each also have been represented in history and myth for ages. All throughout history, birthstone gems have been written and wondered about, appearing in folklore tales and Biblical texts from long ago.

Gemstones are actually human creations. After minerals are formed by pressures and gasses in the earth, we excavate them from deep below. After we excavate these precious or semiprecious stones, we cut and polish them into specific shapes, or cuts. It is then that they are considered to be gems. Gemstones are most often set into gold, silver, or some other precious metal and worn as jewellery. Only stones with high levels of colour, clarity, cut, and durability are considered to be gemstones.

Birthstone history and lore have been a part of various cultures’ belief systems for centuries. We have long held the belief that a special birthstone is dedicated to each month of the year, and that each stone possesses special properties or virtues that it can transmit to those born in that month.

Beginning within the traditions of Judaism and Christianity, there is speculation that the twelve stones in the great breastplate of the Jewish High Priest might have had some influence on this evolution. Centuries ago, the interpreters of Revelation began to ascribe to each of these stone attributes of the twelve apostles.

Whatever the origin, even today it’s within our nature to covet jewellery that is more intimately associated with our personality like a birthstone piece of jewellery. The concept that birthstones possess extra metaphysical significance to the wearer contiunes to hold a spell over the hearts of whoever possess it. The scope of information about birthstones and coloured gems is long and detailed, and may even stir the imagination of a steadfast cynic.

Every month of the year has a particular precious stone that belongs to it. It is believed that wearing the stone of one’s particular birth month brings the individual good luck, health, wealth and prosperity. Birthstone jewels have a birthstone belonging to a particular sun sign beset on it. This piece of jewellery is said to possess the qualities of the birthstone. Birthstone jewellery when worn looks very attractive.

Just as there are twelve months in a year, there are twelve birthstone’s assigned to each month. From January to December they are as followed respectively-

    * Garnet
* Amethyst
* Aquamarine
* Diamond
* Emerald
* Pearl
* Ruby
* Peridot
* Sapphire
* Opal
* Topaz
* Turquoise

The designer silver birthstone jewellery can be a perfect gift, especially for women as it is a universal fact that women love jewels. Gifting some one designer birthstone jewellery on almost any occasion really sends out the message that you truly care as not only do you know the persons birthstone but you have also taken the trouble to find the perfect designer one for him/her.

The best way to get pearls glowing with that gentle lustre is to let them sit next to the skin frequently, moving gently. In other words, pearls look their best when worn frequently. The combination of natural body oils at the neck and/or wrist (assuming that you have a pearl necklace or a pearl bracelet) mixed with the gentle buffing of a soft substance that is similar to but much finer than chamois leather – your skin, even if Father Time and Mother Nature have left fingerprints all over you – is perfect for cleaning pearls. Pearl earrings of the long and dangly kind manage to get enough buffing and oils as well, and also should be worn frequently.

Pearl rings should be kept for special occasions only, as hands are exposed to many more substances than necks. Handwashing, for example. Soap is no good for pearls, and alcohol-based hand sanitizer is even worse. Take your pearl ring off – carefully – if you have to wash your hands if you are wearing a pearl ring. And you’d probably take care of your pearl bracelet, too. Make sure that your pearl necklace and earrings are protected from the chemicals that do go on your neck – namely moisturizer and perfume. Even home-made lotions and fragrances will do pearls no good. Put your pearls on last as a finishing touch after your moisturizer, makeup and perfume.

But sometimes, pearls will get a little grubby and the natural oils from your skin can build up too much (especially mixed with makeup, skin flakes and everyday grime). This grime will need to be cleaned off. Water is about the only readily available thing that will not damage pearls, so you should rub your pearls with a soft cloth dampened in a little warm water. Technically speaking, salt water can be used to clean salt water pearls, but the problem here is the string that holds the pearls together doesn’t like the salt water. If the grime is visible, you can scrape at it gently with your fingernails, as fingernails are the same hardness as pearl and won’t scratch it. But gently is the operative word.

Pearls should not be steam cleaned. Other natural domestic cleaning London methods and products to avoid include baking soda, milk (too acidic), talcum powder and ultrasonic cleaners. Don’t use a toothbrush, which is perfect for other jewellery, or a scouring pad. Just stick to water and a soft cloth, with the occasional poke from a fingernail. Leave them off or just wear them anyway.

Buying someone a gift that incorporates their birthstone is a great idea. From rings to pendants and bracelets, there are some great gift ideas which incorporate birthstones. Here we’ve listed each months birthstone and a list of beautiful birthstone inspired gifts.

Ideas for gifts with birthstones

There are many different types of jewellery that incorporate birthstones. A lovely idea is a pendant made from their birthstone and matching earrings to go with it.

If you know roughly their ring size, a ring with their birthstone is also a great gift idea.

Today you can also buy lots of beautiful figurines and crystal animals which have a small part made from a specific birthstone. Similarly, there are guardian angel brooches which have a small birthstone incorporated into their design.

If jewellery and figurines are not something you think the person you are buying for will like, there are also bookmarks and many other items which incorporate birthstones.

Depending on the birthstone however, will determine how much of these gifts are available. For instance, if you are looking to buy a crystal figurine with a birthstone, you may find it easy if you are looking for garnet or sapphire. However some of the more expensive birthstones such as diamonds and emeralds may not be part of the range.

Here are all of the birthstones for each month.

Some have two stones allocated to that month.

For the first six months of the year the birthstones are: Garnet for January, Amethyst for February, Aquamarine and Bloodstone for March, Diamond for April, Emerald for May and Pearl, Moonstone and Alexandrite for June.

For the last six months of the years the birthstones are:

Ruby for July, Peridot and Sardonyx for August, Sapphire for September, Opal and Pink Tourmaline for October, Citrine and Yellow Topaz for November and Blue topaz and Turquoise for December.

As you can see from the list, some gemstones are rarer and more expensive than others. In the case where there are two birthstones to choose from, look at the current jewellery of the person you are buying for before deciding on one over the other.

Birthstone jewellery often comes with an explanation of that birthstone which is also nice to include in the gift. If however you are buying for someone who was born in April for instance where diamond is the birthstone you may want to buy them diamond earrings or select a ring. There are so many diamond rings on the market that you are not likely to receive a birthstone explanation of why diamonds are for the month of April.

In this case, a great idea is to go online and do some research and print out a little explanation of their birthstone. It adds a little extra meaning to their birthstone gift.

Giving someone a gift that incorporates their birthstone is a great gift idea. I hope we’ve given you some great birthstone gift ideas for the person you’re buying for.

You can find one large that stands out or delicat and small depending on your preference. The necklaces also come with different colored stones along with the diamonds. Some are open butterflies, while other a solid with different designs.

Consider doing some sly questioning to find out what kind of precious metal your loved one likes. They may prefer white gold, yellow gold or
